Serviam: St. Mary Catholic Church, Derby, KS

Knights of Columbus, Council #4458, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Derby, KS was chartered July 21, 1957 with just 44 members.

Since its charter the council has grown into a vibrant and active community of over 350 members. It’s a rich history of community involvement and impact that has lasted over 60 years.

The council began sponsorship of the Boy Scout troop and Cub Scout pack in 1957, followed by the first annual Easter egg hunt for parish children in 1958. It also received its first Star Council Award for the 1958-1959 Fraternal Year, setting the standard for the community involvement that would come to define the organization.

In 1968, the council purchased 80 acres of land and constructed a clubhouse, known as Columbian Acres, which quickly became the hub for members and their families to enjoy hayrack rides, fishing, wiener roasts, dances, and more. A 40 x 60 foot addition to the building was built in 1972, cementing the clubhouse’s place as a central gathering spot for the community.

The council’s impact extended beyond its own community, with the hosting of the State Convention and state bowling tournament in 1977. But perhaps the most significant contribution to the community came in the form of the donation of 30 acres of land to the Parish for the new church and school – a lasting legacy of the council’s commitment to the community it serves.

As part of the Catholic fraternal service organization founded in 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, Connecticut, the Knights of Columbus is dedicated to charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. Members of the organization are involved in a variety of charitable activities, including fundraising for local charities, providing support to veterans, and assisting those in need in their community.

At Council 4458, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Derby, KS, community involvement is at the heart of everything the Knights of Columbus does. We invite you to join us in making a positive impact in the Derby community – whether it’s through becoming a member, volunteering at upcoming events, or simply spreading the word about our mission.

"As a man must be born before he can begin to lead his physical life, so he must be born to lead a Divine Life. That birth occurs in the Sacrament of Baptism. To survive, he must be nourished by Divine Life; that is done in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist."

- Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen
